The length of the IVF process depends on the tests required, medication and treatment plan. From initial consultation to embryo transfer, one IVF cycle takes about three to four weeks on average.

Some patients take birth-control pills to regulate their menstrual cycle before medication begins. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone and follicle-stimulating drugs may be given before egg retrieval, followed by Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) shortly before eggs are harvested. Estrogen and progesterone are typically used at the start of pregnancy, and additional medication may be recommended.
